It’s time to dust off your bike, dig out your Lycra and prepare for Dubai’s legendary sporting event. Although it has been parked for 2020 due to the pandemic, the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge will make its triumphant return in March 2021. Registration is now open at cyclechallenge.ae.
For those who are unfamiliar, the cycle challenge consists of a ride across Dubai that, as the name suggests, covers a whopping 92km. Major roads are closed specifically for the event which offers you a rare opportunity to cycle across the emirate and take in the scenery. It has such global recognition that riders fly in from all across the world to take part in it.
Although it requires a decent level of fitness to get through the full 92km, the challenge is open to all levels of cyclists. It also features four build-up rides so you can test your mettle across stages of increasing length at the Al Qudra cycle track. These will then determine your starting position at the main event.
Said training sessions will take place as follows…
- 1st session – November 28 (37km)
- 2nd session – December 18 (45km)
- 3rd session – January 22 (65km)
- 4th session – March (85km)
All health and safety precautions will be exercised vigorously to ensure that all competitors are within a controlled COVID-19 environment.
Race director Stewart Howinson says of the event, “The challenge is designed to help cyclists pedal away those lockdown cobwebs and be ready for the big day with a series of build-rides taking place at the home of Dubai cycling at Al Qudra Cycling Track”.
The Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge has also introduced Dubai Big 5. Those that sign up for all of the build-up sessions and main event will get a chance to make it on the Dubai Big 5 Series leaderboard and receive a number of perks too. These include VIP parking at the start line, priority start group position and a race pack full of goodies.
