Let’s talk tomatoes! Spinneys launched an exciting new range of tomatoes sourced locally, from the UK, the Netherlands and South Africa; tell us more about the different varieties we now have in stock.

Our Premium Vine Tomatoes have a deep red colour, are greenhouse grown, vine-ripened and have an intense flavour. If you are looking for an all-rounder that is perfect in salads, sandwiches, quiches and breakfast meals, this variety is for you.

Our Piccolo Tomatoes are on the sweeter side and can be enjoyed as an on-the-go snack. They are also perfect for roasting or as the main ingredient in a salad or crudité platter – they will stand out for their heady flavour.

Our Mini San Marzano Tomatoes are more pointed in shape, with a thicker flesh and fewer seeds than other varieties. They boast a savoury flavour with a subtle sweetness and tend to be less acidic. Use San Marzano Tomatoes to flavour pasta sauces or as the star of your favourite pasta dish.

The range also includes other tomato varieties which we have specially selected for their superior flavour, texture and value, like our upgraded premium, on-the-vine Organic British Cherry Tomatoes and our sweet, crisp and juicy Organic Baby Plum Tomatoes, which we love to enjoy as a snack instead of candy.

With so many new varieties from which to choose, what tip or advice would you give our shoppers when picking the perfect tomato?

Don't be scared to feel the tomatoes when sorting through a pile in our stores – but be gentle. Cherry and baby plum tomatoes should feel firm but not hard, while larger tomatoes should feel heavy in your hand but not too solid, soft or swollen. We're happy to now have an option for all of our customers' different cooking and snacking needs.

Which tomato variety is your favourite, and what do you like to make with it?

The Piccolo Cherry Tomatoes are my go-to. Neil tends to agree.

I like to roast them before adding them to a cheese toastie or serving them alongside a nice seabass fillet; they never disappoint. They deliver the perfect balance of savoury sweetness as well as a lovely burst of juicy flavour.

At Spinneys, we pride ourselves on the quality of our produce. What do you look for when sourcing tomatoes?

Our selection criteria for this range focused on the balance of sweetness and acidity but also considered the overall eating experience, including texture, juiciness and appearance.

We pride ourselves on partnering with growers who value making a difference. We also share a passion for providing a unique customer offering and only launch when the product delivers exactly what we're looking for. We have travelled far and wide for the premium tomato selection, with suppliers sending us weekly samples for approval.

What else can our shoppers look forward to in the produce section at Spinneys?

Our produce section is ever-growing. We will be launching purple sprouting broccoli, which one can serve in salads, sides and savoury bakes, snacking peppers from the UK and jewel sweet potatoes around summertime. We will also be upgrading part of our organic tomato offering like the British Cherry Vine Tomatoes, Tomatoes On The Vine and Snacking Tomatoes.
