As the ever-intensifying streaming war continues across multiple platforms, the content pond is expanding daily. A six-part documentary on US immigration, the return of Lucifer, and a pinch-of-salt style comedy about Eurovision – we bring you a few ideas for some TV surfing this week. For those who fancy an escape, Christopher Nolan's long-anticipated Tenet hits movie theatres this weekend.

At the movies

The cinema screens have been dusted off and the doors are open — with strict social-distancing measure in place — which means the latest from Hollywood, Bollywood and beyond will hit the big screen this weekend. And what a weekend it's going to be.

Christopher Nolan's hyped Tenet releases today (Thursday, August 27) and the critics around the world have already been casting judgement. The reviews are mixed, but generally have a positive feel, and the idea of an action-packed flick after months of slow going is something many will be itching for.

Tenet is surely the most eagerly anticipated film to be released theatrically since the coronavirus pandemic began. Partly also because, in some places, it will be the only film to be released theatrically since the virus arrived in February 2020. Writer-director Christopher Nolan sends star John David Washington moving back and forth in every dimension in this sci-fi thriller co-starring Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki. Nolan took more than five years to write the screenplay after deliberating about Tenet's central ideas for over a decade. Delayed three times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it's essentially a spy film and the plot follows a secret agent — known only as The Protagonist — who must manipulate time in order to prevent World War III.

Immigration Nation is a gripping documentary looking inside the world of immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. With unprecedented access to Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) operations, as well as moving portraits of immigrants, this docuseries is an uncomfortable but fascinating watch. Perhaps the main draw of Immigration Nation, is the fact that US authorities did not want you to see it. After viewing a final cut, ICE attempted to block the release of the series and threatened film-makers, Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz with law suits. The duo were allowed to embed with agents, with full support of ICE, for more than two years, prior to the threats.

Lucifer

Lucifer has been a Netflix Original since 2018, when the streaming service picked it up following a cancellation on Fox. Season five just dropped, and there are now plans for a season six. It's an American urban fantasy television series developed by Tom Kapinos based around an original DC Comics character. The series revolves around Lucifer Morningstar, played by Tom Ellis, the Devil, who abandons Hell for Los Angeles where he runs his own nightclub named 'LUX' and becomes a consultant to the LAPD. Yes, it sounds far fetched, but there's a good reason millions of people are hooked.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

It's utterly ridiculous but hilariously funny — as long as you allow it to be. After months of lockdown and far too much misery splattered across the internet, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga is a wonderful choice for a light-hearted, laugh-out-loud kind of evening (or afternoon). It's a 2020 American musical comedy directed by David Dobkin and written by Will Ferrell and Andrew Steele. The comedy, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as Icelandic duo Fire Saga, fills the Eurovision gap of 2020 after this year's contest was cancelled.
