It isn't camping season in the UAE, but that shouldn't stop you from bringing campfire treats to your kitchen, especially when National S'mores Day is just around the corner.
A contraction of the words 'some more' (probably derived from how people felt after tasting their first S'more), the history of S'mores goes back to the 1920s, with credit given to a lady named Loretta Scott Crew for making these delicious parcels over a campfire for Girl Scouts. Early recipes labelled it the 'Graham Cracker Sandwich' and understandably so as the recipe calls for toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between Graham crackers.
If you haven't tried one yet, August 10 is your chance. It's S'Mores Day - a celebration of this terrific creation and an excuse to treat yourself to as many as you like.
Traditionally, S'mores are prepared by gently toasting a marshmallow on a campfire which is pressed between two Graham crackers and a layer of chocolate, with the heat from the marshmallow partially melting the chocolate.
Could you make S'mores without a campfire? Of course. Turn to your toaster, oven or microwave to prepare this part-gooey, part-toasty treat.
Follow these five simple steps to make your set of S'mores at home:
- Line your oven tray with baking paper and lay out the crackers.
- Place a piece of milk chocolate on each cracker.
- Top the chocolate with a marshmallow (or two).
- Bake them for 3-4 minutes or until the marshmallows are golden and slightly gooey.
- Once out of the oven, top it with another cracker. Squish it together and enjoy.
Put a spin on S'mores by playing around with the ingredients
Crackers
Graham crackers, a type of sweet cracker made with graham flour, are a popular choice in the US but around the world, S'mores are created with other sweet and savoury crackers or semi-sweet biscuits such as McVitie's Digestives.
Chocolate
The cocoa to butter content in milk chocolate allows it to melt faster, therefore making it the best type of chocolate for S'mores. However, you could use a bar of dark chocolate instead – Lindt are the experts here.
Marshmallows
Vanilla flavoured marshmallows have always been a part of the recipe, but you could tweak it to include fruit or mini marshmallows.
Extra fillings
Lastly, if you're not one to go by the book, you could get creative and add another layer to the sandwich dessert. Though jams, nut butters, and hazelnut cream work well, you could experiment with fruits such as strawberries and bananas too.
