Deliciously sweet and packed full of fibre and vitamins, there’s a good reason fruit is recommended as part of a healthy diet. Each juicy piece of fruit contains so much of what we need to maintain healthy teeth, gums, hair, bones and muscles, as well as keeping things ticking over nicely in the heart department. While some choose a diet of primarily fruit and vegetables, science suggests we should all be eating at least five pieces of fruit every day. Some fruit grows on the ground, but most comes from trees or bushes. When it comes to the Spinneys selection, the best producers are on hand all year round to keep the fruit and veg stands brimming with the freshest options.
Rockit Apples
The world’s first miniature apples are currently in season at Spinneys. First produced in New Zealand, Rockit Apples are now grown and sold in various countries around the world. Although they’re much smaller than most common varieties of the fruit, they come loaded with 65% more potassium and 10% more fibre. Rockit Apples are also GMO-free and are a good source of energy. These sweet apples come in portable, recyclable tubes, which make them an easy on-the-go snack.
Blueberries
Originally from North America, and now cultivated all over Europe, blueberries have become a popular superfood. Spinneys procures its blueberries from Levarht, a trusted supplier.
Their high-water content means a whole cup of blueberries contains only about 84 calories, but will provide almost a quarter of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Plus they’re bursting with antioxidants, which prevent cell damage. Since they perish easily, it is best to store blueberries in the fridge.
One of the most nutrient-packed varieties of berries, blueberries are also extremely versatile – you can throw them into smoothies, add them to baked goods for a pop of flavour and colour, or just eat them whole.
How to freeze grapes
Place clean, dry grapes on a tray lined with wax paper. Store in the freezer until frozen solid, then transfer the grapes to a zip lock storage bag and return to the freezer for up to three months.
Did you know? Grapes originated in several different parts of the world. Ancient Romans used grapes as decor and the subjects for paintings and sculptures. Today, grapes are a great way to keep kids happy and a convenient snack for all.
Melons
Spinneys sources high-quality melons from two suppliers – Levarht and Taste of Spain. Levarht, a Dutch company that was founded in 1933, connects growers, seed companies, and strategic and logistics partners, giving consumers in the UAE the chance to enjoy a variety of the freshest melons from Spain, Brazil, Honduras and Costa Rica. A family-owned business, Taste of Spain was started in 2009. The company partners with growers around Spain to provide Spinneys with delicious fruit. The melons are flown into the UAE within 48-72 hours of being picked ensuring they’re as fresh as can be.
Peaches
For sweet and juicy peaches and nectarines, Spinneys works with Spanish supplier, Summer Fruit. This family-run business has over 50 years of experience producing, packaging and delivering premium-quality fruit. The company owns over 800 hectares in various parts of Aragón and Catalonia. The optimal weather conditions in these regions ensure the fruit has a characteristic hardness, colour and sugar content.
