Maternity clothes – what to invest in

Maternity clothes can make all the difference for comfort and style, especially around the four-month mark. Think soft, stretchy fabrics that hug your bump just right and allow room for your growing belly. Consider adjustable waistbands, elastic panels and ruching for flexibility. Opt for styles designed specifically for pregnant women, such as empire waistlines, A-line silhouettes and wrap dresses, all of which provide room for your belly to grow. Comfort is key, so pay attention to soft fabrics and pieces that allow easy movement.

When you hit the five-month mark, it is a really nice time to prioritise essentials like maternity jeans, leggings and tops that can mix and match for versatility.

Finally, when you reach seven months, you might need to start investing in supportive undergarments, including maternity bras and belly bands, to provide additional support as your body changes, especially during a twin pregnancy.

Holly’s seven top buys for expectant mothers

  • Maternity jeans: A good pair of maternity jeans with a stretchy waistband can provide comfort, versatility and style throughout your pregnancy.
  • Maxi dresses: Flowy maxi dresses are perfect for the warm weather and provide plenty of room for your growing belly.
  • Maternity leggings: Comfortable maternity leggings are a must-have for everyday wear, whether you're running errands or relaxing at home.
  • Nursing bras: Invest in supportive nursing bras that provide comfort and ease during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Lightweight shirt and short sets: Opt for lightweight tops and shirts made from breathable cotton and linen fabrics to stay cool in the heat while accommodating your changing body.
  • Button-down and ruched dresses: Look for silhouettes that can easily adapt to fit your changing shape and are perfect for both casual and dressier occasions.
  • Cosy loungewear: If a sweater could give you a hug, this would be it! Invest in a few sets of cosy, lightweight, beautifully soft loungewear pieces and socks to provide much-needed comfort on those lazy days at home.

Styling for early motherhood

When you are in the postpartum period, consider versatile basics that you can easily mix and match. Think comfy current jean styles – don’t wait to buy jeans; they are the most practical piece a mum can own and it will make a huge difference to your self-esteem. Additionally, opt for easy-to-wear button-down shirts and flattering dresses. Don't forget to add some personality with accessories and shoes! Wear your favourite jewellery, invest in a bag you love, or chuck on a fedora hat; accessorising can elevate even the simplest outfit without sacrificing comfort.

When choosing fabrics, go for soft, breathable materials like cotton or bamboo that are easy to care for because, let's face it, spills happen! And above all, prioritise comfort in your clothing choices. Whether you're chasing after your little one or running errands around town, feeling good in what you're wearing is what truly matters.

Finding your new sense of style with a different body can be a journey of self-discovery and self-love. Start by embracing your body as it is now, recognising and celebrating the incredible journey it has been through. Above all, be patient and kind to yourself as you navigate this transition, and remember that true style comes from feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin.

After having my children, I envisioned a brand that would help women reconnect with themselves through clothing, while also fostering unity with their little ones. And so CAROB was born, celebrating motherhood through cool, effortless styles that match your little ones.
